Pages 2Print
For authors in today’s digital era, the ability to publish a book is no longer locked behind the doors of traditional publishing houses. Thanks to powerful tools like Apple® Pages®—free on every iOS and macOS device—writers can now take their manuscript from idea to publication with surprising ease.
Whether you're writing a memoir, biography, or nonfiction deep dive, Pages® offers all the necessary features to design, format, and publish both eBooks and print-ready paperbacks. Best of all, the work you create can be distributed directly to readers via the Apple® Book Store or repurposed for platforms like Amazon® Kindle®.
“The beauty of modern publishing is that the writer has control—not just over words, but over how those words meet the world.” — Walter Isaacson, author of Steve Jobs
Why Choose Pages?
Pages isn't just a word processor—it's a fully integrated publishing tool. It comes equipped with templates tailored for books, options for exporting into EPUB format (used by Apple Books®), and settings that allow precise control over layout and typography. Pages gives authors a clean, intuitive interface that supports collaborative editing, iCloud backups, and seamless transitions between iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
“Today, publishing is about precision. From font choice to metadata, everything matters. Pages makes it all visible and changeable in real time.” — Robert Caro, author of The Power Broker
Step-by-Step: Creating an eBook in Pages for Apple Books
- Start with a Template
Open Pages® and choose “Books®” from the template gallery. Options include Portrait and Landscape orientations designed for EPUB export. Portrait is most common for biography and nonfiction. - Write and Format Your Content
Use styles for consistent headings and body text. Insert images, tables, and charts as needed. Pages® supports live links, audio, and video, but remember these are EPUB-friendly features, not ideal for Kindle formatting. - Add a Table of Contents
Pages automatically generates a Table of Contents based on paragraph styles (e.g., Heading, Subheading). This is crucial for EPUB navigation and user experience. - Export to EPUB
Once the manuscript is complete, go to File > Export To > EPUB. Customize your title, author name, and cover image in the dialog box. - Upload to Apple Books
Use the Apple Books for Authors® platform (https://authors.apple.com) to upload the EPUB file. You’ll need an Apple ID, an iTunes Connect® account, and an ISBN. Apple® also provides analytics, marketing tools, and access to global distribution.
Creating a Print Book with Pages
In addition to digital books, authors can use Pages to create print-ready PDFs for services like Amazon KDP® (Kindle Direct Publishing®) or IngramSpark®.
- Page Setup for Print
Set custom dimensions to match your trim size (e.g., 6" x 9"). Adjust margins for binding (inside margins larger than outside). - Design Interior Layout
Pages allows section breaks, page numbering, and mirrored margins. Use “Insert > Page Break” to manage chapters. Avoid using EPUB-only features for print books (like video or interactive widgets). - Add Front and Back Matter
Include copyright page, dedication, acknowledgments, and about-the-author sections. Pages lets you create consistent styles and headers for professional layout. - Export to PDF
Go to File > Export To > PDF. Choose “Best” quality. Make sure fonts are embedded, and verify print specs like bleeds or crop marks if required by your printer. - Upload to Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP)
Visit https://kdp.amazon.com and follow the steps to upload your manuscript, cover, and metadata. KDP accepts PDF for print books and EPUB for Kindle eBooks. You may also choose to convert your EPUB using free tools like Calibre® or Amazon’s Kindle® Previewer. The PC and Mac program, Kindle Create® is also useful, as is the program Canva®.
What Pages offers is not just formatting but freedom—the ability to see your book as a real product, worthy of a shelf or a screen.”
— Doris Kearns Goodwin, author of Team of Rivals
Tips for Both Apple Books and Kindle
- Use Simple Fonts: Times New Roman, Georgia, Palatino, or Helvetica are safe choices for EPUBs and print. Avoid system fonts not supported on other platforms.
- Consistent Styling: Apply paragraph and character styles rather than manual formatting. This ensures smoother conversions.
- Hyperlinks and Footnotes: Both are supported in EPUBs; test them before publishing.
- Cover Design: Pages can create simple covers, but professional design tools or hiring a designer is recommended for competitive visibility.
- ISBNs: Apple requires ISBNs for all titles. Amazon provides free ISBNs for paperbacks, but you can bring your own for consistency across platforms.
- When users have multiple Apple® devices, MacBooks, iPhones, iPads, installing Pages® on every device means that ebook project editing may happen anywhere the user as the device. Content changes will be synchronized via any device.
Apple Pages® empowers nonfiction and biography authors to bridge the divide between creativity and publishing. With no need for advanced design skills or expensive software, Pages® serves as a quiet revolution for independent authors. It gives you the tools to write, design, and distribute your work with the grace and control once reserved for professional publishing houses.
“In nonfiction, accuracy and aesthetics both matter. Tools like Pages help ensure you don’t sacrifice one for the other.” — Erik Larson, author of The Splendid and the Vile
